Addressing sleep disturbances in children.

  • Wakeful babies and children : either wake up happy, or they may be distressed. The nature of their waking, hyperactivity, playful, restless, inconsolable, unable to be put down at all, etc are all indications which are crucial to the appropriate selection of the homeopathic remedy.


  • Homeopathy for Sleep: Remedies like Coffea cruda, Chamomilla, Pulsatilla and Tarantula Hispanica are extremely supportive if the symptom picture fits, but consulting a homeopath for individualized treatment is recommended.


  • Sleep Apnea and ADHD: Sleep apnea is common in children with ADHD (around 80%), and sleep problems can sometimes mimic ADHD symptoms. Consider a sleep evaluation if ADHD is suspected.

Instead, parents often consider alternatives like magnesium, 5-HTP (increases Serotonin levels), or B6, which can support natural sleep cycles. My advice is always to stop after 8 weeks or so and allow the body to regain it's natural equilibrium and to reassess the necessity of any such intervention.


  • Homeopathy for Anxiety: If sleep issues are tied to anxiety (e.g., separation anxiety), working with a professional homeopath can help alleviate stress and improve sleep.


  • Sleep Environment: Ensure the bedroom is sleep-friendly—no electronics, and possibly use essential oils like lavender or calming sounds like binaural beats to create a relaxing atmosphere.


  • Body Temperature Regulation: Adding a heavier blanket or quilt later at night can help keep body temperature stable and prevent waking.


  • Mouth Breathing Issues: Mouth breathing can affect sleep quality and lead to behavioural and emotional issues. Addressing this via homeopathy can also improve sleep.


  • Behavioural Signs to recognise: Children may show signs like excessive movement or chatter when overtired, indicating it's time for bed. Try bringing bedtime forward by 15 to 30 minutes and see if this helps your child.


  • Parental Support and Routine: Co-sleeping or using comforting items like a parent's sweatshirt can help children feel secure and sleep better. It is worth examining your feelings around the cultural 'norm' we have in the West where children sleep alone. Studies show that children who co-sleep tend to sleep better and be more emotionally well rounded.   • Psychological Treatments for Sleep: Possible approaches include stimulus control, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and progressive muscle relaxation.


  • Prevalence of Sleep Disturbances: Sleep issues are common in children, especially those with conditions like ADHD, autism, anxiety, and depression.
