Homeopathic Remedies for Menstrual Period Cramps

Homeopathy can be a tremendous support if you suffer from Painful Periods.

Menstrual cramps, or dysmenorrhea, can be a debilitating part of your monthly cycle. If you are looking for an alternative to painkillers, you are in the right place. Homeopathy's natural remedies are tailored to your specific symptoms making them extremely effective as long as you research them correctly. Book in to speak to me if you are finding it difficult to manage your pain alone or if the pain is accompanied by heavy blood flow and has been going on for many months.

My Top Seven highly effective homeopathic remedies for managing period pain are:

1. Magnesia Phosphorica

Often called the “homeopathic aspirin,” Mag Phos is perfect for sharp, shooting, or spasmodic cramps that are eased by warmth and gentle pressure. Pain often precedes the flow. If you find relief by curling up with a heating pad or hot water bottle, you should benefit from this remedy. Pop a couple of pillules into a small glass of warm water as Mag phos can be more effective if taken in this way.

2. Belladonna

This remedy is ideal for sudden, intense cramps that come on rapidly and feel pulsating, gushing or throbbing. If the pain worsens with movement, noise, or light touch, Belladonna can offer fast relief particularly if your blood flow is bright red and there is a feeling of heat.

3. Pulsatilla

Erratic or shifting cramps that improve with fresh air and light movement respond well to Pulsatilla. It’s particularly suited to women who feel emotionally sensitive or crave comfort and companionship during their period. Often the period may start late and be clotty but in this remedy picture there is always a needy, tearful picture.

4. Sepia

Sepia works wonders for women experiencing dragging, bearing-down pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis, often described as if their organs are being pulled downward. It’s also helpful when fatigue, irritability, or emotional detachment accompanies cramps. You may find yourself snapping at your family, particularly if you are already feeling worn out.

5. Chamomilla

An extreme picture, very severe unendurable cramps that lead to irritability and even anger often point to Chamomilla. The pain can feel unbearable, you may be inconsolable, demanding, and hypersensitive to this high level of discomfort.

6. Colocynthis

Colocynthis is an excellent remedy for intense, bearing down, cramping pain that is relieved by doubling over, pressing into the abdomen, or applying firm pressure. If warmth also eases the pain, this remedy could be a great match. It’s particularly helpful if you feel better curled up in a ball, feel restless or agitated due to the severity of the cramps.

7. Cimicifuga (Actaea Racemosa)

This remedy is recommended for cramps that cross the pelvis from hip to hip, that radiate to other areas, such as the thighs or back and where the the Uterus feels tender. Cimicifuga is especially helpful when the pain feels heavy and is accompanied by gloom and dejection, anxiety, as if there was a black cloud over everything.

How to Use These Remedies

If you find a remedy where the symptoms match closely, take a dose of whatever potency you have to hand. I find 200c suits the intensity of severe pain best and 30c is better for milder more prolonged pains but this is a very individual decision. Always wait and watch after taking a remedy then repeat as needed, always allowing time to observe the effects. If the pain persists, come and talk to me for personalized care.

You can find further information on Potency & Dose in the Blog of that name on this site.
